nedsenket

Nedsenket is a Norwegian adjective formed from the verb nedsenke, meaning to lower, sink, or submerge. The most common sense is physical: something that has been lowered into or lies beneath a surface. In nautical, marine, and civil engineering contexts it describes vessels, platforms, or structures that are sunken or immersed in water or another medium. The term can also describe elements that are recessed or set into another material, for example a door, window, or light fixture that is nedsenket i veggen or in the ceiling.

Etymology: from ned- meaning down and senke meaning to lower, with the past participle suffix -ket.

Usage: Primarily used predicatively: “Skipet er nedsenket” (the ship is sunken). It can also appear attributively

See also: nedsenking (the act of lowering, sinking), senke (to lower), nedsenkning.

Examples:

- Skipet er fullstendig nedsenket. (The ship is completely sunken.)

- Døren var nedsenket i veggen. (The door was recessed in the wall.)
