Necessitarianism is a philosophical view asserting that some things are necessarily true, meaning they could not possibly have been otherwise. This is in contrast to contingent truths, which are true but could have been false. The concept of necessity is central to metaphysics and modal logic. A key question for necessitarianism is whether necessity applies to all true propositions, or only to certain kinds of propositions, such as logical or mathematical truths.

Within necessitarianism, there are varying degrees of commitment. Some philosophers argue that all truths are necessary, a view known as modal collapse. Others maintain that only a subset of truths, like those of logic and mathematics, possess necessity, while empirical facts about the world are contingent. The debate often involves exploring the nature of possible worlds and how necessity relates to modality. If something is necessarily true, it is true in all possible worlds. Conversely, if something is contingently true, it is true in some possible worlds but not all.
