Nasilagetårerøret refers to the nasolacrimal duct, a vital component of the human tear drainage system. This narrow tube connects the lacrimal sac, located in the medial corner of the eye socket, to the nasal cavity. Its primary function is to drain excess tears from the eye's surface, preventing them from overflowing onto the cheeks.

The process begins when tears are produced by the lacrimal glands. These tears lubricate and protect the eye. When blinking occurs, the eyelids act like a pump, pushing tears towards the lacrimal puncta, small openings located in the inner corners of the upper and lower eyelids. From the puncta, tears enter the lacrimal canaliculi, which then lead to the lacrimal sac. Finally, the nasolacrimal duct empties the tears from the lacrimal sac into the inferior meatus of the nasal cavity.

Blockage of the nasolacrimal duct, known as dacryostenosis, is a common condition that can affect individuals of all ages. In infants, it often resolves spontaneously within the first year of life. In adults, blockages can be caused by inflammation, infection, or anatomical abnormalities. Symptoms of a blocked nasolacrimal duct include excessive tearing (epiphora), recurrent eye infections, and a swollen, tender area near the inner corner of the eye. Treatment options vary depending on the cause and severity of the blockage, and may include massage, antibiotic eye drops, or surgical procedures to open or bypass the obstruction.
