Napéjegyenlséget, also known as the equinox, is an astronomical event that occurs twice a year. During a napéjegyenlséget, the Sun is directly above the Earth's equator. This results in approximately equal amounts of daylight and darkness across the globe, hence the name "equinox" which comes from Latin words meaning "equal night."

There are two napéjegyenlségts annually. The vernal equinox, occurring around March 20th or 21st, marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Conversely, the autumnal equinox, around September 22nd or 23rd, signifies the start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere.

During the napéjegyenlséget, the Earth's axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the Sun. This unique alignment causes the Sun to rise precisely due east and set precisely due west for all observers on Earth. The angle of the Sun above the horizon at noon is also at its highest point on the equator during these events. The napéjegyenlséget are significant markers in the annual cycle and have been recognized and celebrated by cultures throughout history.
