The term is often used in science fiction and futuristic discussions to describe hypothetical devices that could manipulate matter at atomic or molecular levels, potentially enabling advanced applications such as nanomedicine, nanomanufacturing, or even nanoscale construction.

In scientific theory, nanorobots—often referred to as nanobots—are proposed as machines on the nanometer scale (1–100 nanometers) that could perform precise operations within biological systems or materials. Unlike traditional robots, nanorobots would theoretically operate at scales comparable to biological molecules, offering potential breakthroughs in drug delivery, tissue repair, or environmental remediation. However, as of now, true nanorobots remain largely in the realm of theoretical research, with significant challenges in miniaturization, power supply, and control.

The term "nanoroid" may also appear in speculative fiction, where it is sometimes used interchangeably with nanobots or as a fictionalized version of such technology. In these contexts, nanoroids are often depicted as highly advanced, autonomous machines capable of self-replication, adaptive behavior, or even consciousness.
