Najstarija is a feminine form of the adjective meaning “oldest” in South Slavic languages such as Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Slovenian. The root word naj- is a superlative prefix meaning “most” or “most‑”, while stariji (masculine) or starija (feminine) derives from star, meaning “old”. Consequently najstarija is used to describe the person, place, object or event that has the greatest age relative to a set of comparable items.

In everyday speech Najstarija is usually followed by a noun in the feminine singular, for example najstarija žena (the oldest woman) or najstarija knjiga (the oldest book). The adjective can also stand alone as a title or a proper noun, particularly in literary, musical or civic contexts. Several cultural works use Najstarija as a title: a 1990s Serbian song, a Croatian novel about an elderly village elder, and a documentary film on the oldest surviving building in Zagreb.

Geographically, Najstarija is sometimes part of place names. There are a few small settlements in the Plitvice region and the Banovina area that incorporate the term.
