Naiunea is a proposed proto-language in historical linguistics, introduced as part of the Naiunea hypothesis to explain shared phonological and lexical patterns among a cluster of languages spoken along a coastal region in the southern hemisphere. As a reconstructive construct, Naiunea is not attested in any written records but is inferred from comparative analysis of its descendant languages.

The term naiunea was coined by linguist L. Kestrel in 1999; it combines a reconstructed root associated with the sea in the proposed daughter languages with a conventional proto-language suffix, forming a label used in regional studies and debates about deep historical connections.

Proposed features of the Naiunea reconstruction include a relatively small consonant inventory (for example, p, t, k, s, m, n, l) and a vowel system of five qualities (a, e, i, o, u). The model allows limited phonological processes such as sonority-driven changes and a tendency toward regular sound correspondences across related languages. Morphologically, Naiunea is described as predominantly fusional with affixal attachments, and its basic syntactic tendencies are discussed as flexible, with variations among its putative descendants; pronoun systems may include inclusive and exclusive distinctions.

History and reception: The Naiunea hypothesis emerged from observed lexical and phonetic correspondences and has been explored by researchers aiming to unify several language varieties. Many linguists regard Naiunea as speculative, noting data insufficiencies and offering alternative explanations such as language contact or parallel development. The proposal remains controversial and is not broadly accepted as a definitive reconstruction.
