The nøytrallederen, or neutral conductor, is a fundamental component in electrical power systems, particularly in alternating current (AC) circuits. Its primary function is to provide a return path for current, completing the circuit back to the source. In a three-phase system, the neutral conductor is connected to the neutral point of the winding, which is often at ground potential. This connection helps to balance the voltages between the phases and the neutral.

In single-phase systems, the neutral conductor is typically connected to the center tap of a transformer winding. It carries the current from the load back to the transformer. While the neutral conductor usually carries current, it is not intended to carry the same magnitude of current as the phase conductors under normal operating conditions, especially in balanced three-phase loads.

The neutral conductor plays a crucial role in safety. By establishing a reference potential, it helps to limit voltage fluctuations and provides a path for fault current to flow. In many installations, the neutral conductor is bonded to ground at the service entrance. This grounding helps to protect against overvoltages caused by lightning strikes or faults in the power system.
