Närviärritus, also known as nerve irritation or neuritis, refers to a condition characterized by inflammation or damage to a nerve or nerves. This irritation can cause a variety of symptoms, primarily pain, but also numbness, tingling, weakness, or altered sensation in the area supplied by the affected nerve. The causes of närviärritus are diverse and can include physical trauma such as direct injury, compression from surrounding tissues (like in carpal tunnel syndrome), or repetitive strain. Infections, autoimmune disorders where the body attacks its own nerve tissue, and certain medical conditions like diabetes can also lead to nerve irritation.

The symptoms experienced depend on which nerve is affected and the severity of the irritation. For instance, irritation of a peripheral nerve in a limb might manifest as localized pain, burning sensations, or difficulty moving the limb. If a nerve root exiting the spinal cord is compressed or inflamed, the pain may radiate down an arm or leg. Diagnosis often involves a physical examination, neurological tests to assess nerve function, and sometimes imaging studies like MRI to identify structural causes of compression or inflammation. Treatment aims to address the underlying cause and alleviate symptoms, which may involve rest, physical therapy, medications to reduce inflammation or pain, or in some cases, surgery to relieve pressure on the nerve.
