Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States primarily for people aged 65 and older. It also covers younger individuals with certain disabilities and those with End-Stage Renal Disease. The program is administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Medicare is divided into several parts. Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people do not pay a monthly premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. Part B covers doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. Most beneficiaries pay a monthly premium for Part B.

Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and often include prescription drug coverage, combining Parts A, B, and D into a single plan. Part D provides prescription drug coverage and is offered by private insurance companies. Beneficiaries usually pay a monthly premium for Part D.

Eligibility for Medicare is generally based on age or disability. Individuals typically become eligible 65 years old after paying Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. Those with specific disabilities or End-Stage Renal Disease may qualify earlier. Enrollment periods are important; missing initial enrollment windows can lead to penalties and gaps in coverage. The program's funding comes from payroll taxes, premiums paid by beneficiaries, and general federal revenue.
