Mäluelement is a Swedish term that translates to "memory element" in English. It refers to a fundamental component within a computer system responsible for storing data. These elements are the building blocks of all types of computer memory, from the small caches within a processor to the vast storage drives. The core function of a mäluelement is to hold a binary state, representing either a 0 or a 1.

Different types of mäluelement exist, each with varying characteristics in terms of speed, capacity, and volatility. For instance, a transistor can act as a mäluelement in dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), where it stores a charge that can degrade over time, requiring constant refreshing.
