Másodpercek is a Hungarian term referring to the unit of time known in English as seconds. In Hungarian usage, másodpercek denotes durations measured in seconds, the standard time unit used in everyday speech and scientific contexts.

The SI second, symbol s, is the base unit of time in the International System of Units. It is defined as the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium-133 atom. This atomic definition makes the second a highly stable and repeatable standard used globally in science, technology, and industry.

Subdivisions and related units include millisecond (ms), microsecond (µs), nanosecond (ns), and smaller or larger prefixes. For practical purposes, longer times are expressed in minutes and hours, with 1 minute equal to 60 seconds, 1 hour equal to 3600 seconds, and 1 day approximately 86,400 seconds.

Historically, the second was first defined as 1/86400 of mean solar time. In 1967 it was redefined in terms of the cesium-133 transition frequency, and during the 2010s the SI system fixed the numerical value of this frequency to stabilize the definition. Today the second remains tied to atomic physics, providing a precise and universally accepted measure of time.

Time standards such as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) combine atomic time with occasional leap seconds to keep UT1, the astronomical time, in close alignment with civil time. Leap seconds are added (and rarely subtracted) to account for irregularities in Earth's rotation, ensuring synchronization within about one second.
