Mutoshäiriöitä, also known as movement disorders, is a broad category of neurological conditions characterized by abnormal involuntary movements or a lack of voluntary movement. Symptoms can manifest in various ways. Hyperkinetic movements include tremors, chorea (sudden, jerky, dance-like movements), athetosis (slow, writhing movements), dystonia (sustained muscle contractions causing twisting or abnormal postures), and tics (sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic motor movements or vocalizations). Conversely, hypokinetic movements involve a reduction or absence of movement, such as in parkinsonism, which is characterized by rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and tremor.

The causes of mutoshäiriöitä are diverse and can include genetic factors, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, infections, and exposure to certain toxins or medications. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough neurological examination, medical history, and may be supplemented by neuroimaging techniques such as MRI or CT scans, and sometimes genetic testing.

Treatment approaches vary depending on the specific disorder and its underlying cause. They can include medications to manage symptoms, such as dopaminergic agents for Parkinsonism or botulinum toxin injections for dystonia. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy often play crucial roles in improving function and quality of life.
