Muundurites, also known as transformers, are electrical devices that transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. They are essential components in electrical power systems, enabling the efficient transmission and distribution of electricity. The fundamental principle of operation for a muundur relies on Faraday's law of induction. A basic muundur consists of two coils of wire, the primary coil and the secondary coil, wound around a common ferromagnetic core. When an alternating current (AC) flows through the primary coil, it creates a fluctuating magnetic field within the core. This changing magnetic field then induces an alternating voltage in the secondary coil.

The ratio of the number of turns in the primary coil to the number of turns in the secondary coil determines whether the muundur is a step-up or step-down device. In a step-up muundur, the secondary coil has more turns than the primary, resulting in a higher output voltage. Conversely, a step-down muundur has fewer turns in the secondary coil, producing a lower output voltage. This voltage transformation capability is crucial for power transmission, where high voltages are used to minimize energy loss over long distances, and then stepped down for safe use in homes and industries. Muundurites are also used for impedance matching, electrical isolation, and in various electronic circuits.
