munina

Munina is a fictional genus of flowering plants created for worldbuilding in the fantasy-science setting of Eldoria. It is placed in the family Asteraceae and named in honor of the fictional botanist Munina Valis. The genus appears in Eldorian field guides as an illustrative example of coastal flora adapted to dry conditions.

Taxonomy and species: Munina comprises two described species, Munina aurea and Munina viridis. M. aurea has bright golden-yellow capitula with narrow, linear leaves; M. viridis features broader, dark-green leaves and pale-yellow heads. Both are perennial herbs with a woody basal caudex; stems are erect and branched.

Morphology and ecology: The plants reach 0.6–1.4 meters tall, with alternately arranged leaves ranging from lanceolate to oval. Inflorescences are composite heads typical of Asteraceae, with yellow ray florets surrounding a central disk. The fruits are cypselas with pappus.

Habitat and distribution: Endemic to the coastal archipelago of Nysara in Eldoria, Munina species grow in dry coastal scrub, dune pockets, and open meadows. They tolerate sandy soils and salt spray, and prefer full sun.

Uses and cultural significance: In Eldorian lore, Munina flowers are used in ceremonial garlands and as ornamental plants in gardens. Essential oils and extracts are noted in fictional ethnobotany as having limited use in traditional medicine.

Taxonomic history: The genus was first described in 2042 by botanist L. Rinas in the field guide Flora of Eldoria. The name honors Munina Valis, a fictional figure who contributed to Eldorian botany.
