munajohtimien

Munajohtimien, also known as fallopian tubes or oviducts, are a crucial part of the female reproductive system. These are two thin, muscular tubes that extend from the upper part of the uterus towards the ovaries. Each tube is approximately 10 to 13 centimeters long and about 0.5 to 1 centimeter in diameter. The inner lining of the munajohtimet is covered with cilia, which are tiny hair-like structures that help to move the egg towards the uterus.

The primary function of the munajohtimet is to transport eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. Ovulation, the release of an egg from an ovary, occurs typically once a month. The fimbriae, finger-like projections at the end of the munajohtimet near the ovary, sweep over the ovary to catch the released egg and guide it into the tube. Fertilization, the fusion of sperm and egg, usually takes place within the munajohtimet. If fertilization occurs, the resulting embryo then travels down the tube to the uterus for implantation.

Blockages or damage to the munajohtimet can significantly impact fertility. Causes can include infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, or previous surgeries. These conditions can lead to scarring and inflammation, obstructing the passage of eggs or sperm. Ectopic pregnancies, where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly occur in the munajohtimet. Due to their critical role in reproduction, the health of the munajohtimet is essential for successful conception.
