Multiresistenten, often referred to as multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), are microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites that have developed resistance to multiple antimicrobial medications. This means that drugs which were once effective in treating infections caused by these organisms are now ineffective. The development of multiresistance is a significant global health concern, leading to increased morbidity and mortality, longer hospital stays, and higher healthcare costs.

The primary driver of multiresistance is the misuse and overuse of antimicrobial drugs in both human and animal health. When antimicrobials are used unnecessarily or incorrectly, susceptible microorganisms are killed, but any that possess even a small degree of resistance can survive and multiply. This process, known as selective pressure, favors the emergence and spread of resistant strains. Genetic mutations within the microorganisms themselves, or the acquisition of resistance genes from other microbes, contribute to the development of these resistant traits.

Multiresistant organisms can spread from person to person, through contaminated surfaces, food, water, or direct contact. Hospitals and healthcare settings are often hotspots for the transmission of MDROs due to the high concentration of vulnerable patients and frequent use of antibiotics. Preventing the spread of multiresistant organisms involves a multi-pronged approach, including improving infection prevention and control practices, promoting responsible antimicrobial use, developing new diagnostic tools, and investing in the research and development of novel antimicrobial therapies.
