In economics, the term multiplier refers to an economic factor that, when increased or decreased, causes a greater proportional increase or decrease in a related variable. For example, an investment multiplier suggests that an initial injection of spending into an economy will lead to a larger increase in national income. This is because the initial spending becomes income for someone else, who then spends a portion of it, creating further income for others, and so on. The size of the multiplier depends on factors such as the marginal propensity to consume and save.

The concept of a multiplier can also be found in physics and engineering, where it might describe a device or a process that increases the magnitude of a signal or a quantity. For example, a photomultiplier tube amplifies a very weak light signal into a measurable electrical current. In this case, the tube acts as a multiplicator of photons. The term is broadly applied to any situation where one value or process leads to a significantly larger effect in another.
