Multiplexerek, also known as MUXes, are electronic devices that select one of several analog or digital input signals and forwards the selected input into a single output line. The selection of a particular input signal is controlled by a separate set of digital signals called select lines.

A multiplexer works by taking multiple input lines and one output line. It also has a set of select lines, the number of which determines how many input lines can be accommodated. For instance, if a multiplexer has 'n' select lines, it can handle up to 2^n input lines. The select lines act like switches, directing the chosen input signal to the output. If the select lines are set to a particular binary combination, the corresponding input channel is connected to the output.

Multiplexers are fundamental building blocks in digital logic and computer systems. They are used in a wide variety of applications, including data routing, signal selection, and parallel-to-serial conversion.
