A 4-to-1 MUX, for instance, has four input lines and requires two select lines because 2^2 = 4. Each unique combination of the select lines corresponds to a specific input being routed. The design of a MUX typically involves logic gates like AND, OR, and NOT gates arranged in a specific configuration.
