Multidistillation is a process used in chemistry and chemical engineering to purify liquids by repeatedly vaporizing and condensing them. It involves performing a distillation process multiple times in succession, either in a single apparatus or by transferring the distillate from one distillation setup to another. The goal of multidistillation is to achieve a higher degree of separation and purity than is possible with a single distillation step, particularly when dealing with mixtures containing components with very close boiling points or when a very high purity is required.

The effectiveness of multidistillation relies on the principle of fractional distillation, where each vaporization-condensation cycle provides a better separation of components. In each step, the vapor phase is enriched in the more volatile component, while the liquid phase becomes enriched in the less volatile component. By repeating this process, the concentration of the desired component in the final distillate can be significantly increased. Multidistillation is often employed in the production of high-purity solvents, analytical reagents, and in the separation of complex mixtures where a single distillation would yield insufficient purity. While effective, it is a more time-consuming and energy-intensive process compared to single distillation.
