Multicastryhmään refers to a multicast group in computer networking. A multicast group is a logical collection of network devices that have joined a specific multicast channel. When a sender transmits data to a multicast address, that data is delivered to all devices that have joined the corresponding multicast group. This is a more efficient way to send data to multiple recipients than sending individual copies to each one, as would be done with unicast.

Devices join a multicast group by using protocols such as the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) on IPv4 networks or the Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) protocol on IPv6 networks. These protocols allow routers to track which multicast groups are active on their connected networks, ensuring that multicast traffic is only forwarded to subnets that have at least one member interested in receiving it.

Multicast is widely used in applications where a single data stream needs to reach many destinations simultaneously, such as live video streaming, online gaming, stock market data distribution, and certain teleconferencing scenarios. By replicating data only at the points where the network branches into different recipient groups, multicast significantly reduces network bandwidth consumption and server load compared to unicast or broadcast methods.
