Mudpads are a type of makeshift bedding or cushioning commonly found in certain rural or historical contexts. They are typically constructed from readily available natural materials, primarily mud mixed with straw or other fibrous organic matter. This mixture is then shaped and allowed to dry, forming a firm yet somewhat yielding surface.

The primary purpose of a mudpad was to provide a more comfortable and insulated sleeping surface compared to bare earth or hard floors. The mud offered a degree of insulation against cold and dampness, while the incorporated straw added a slight cushioning effect. They were often used in simple dwellings, agricultural settings, or temporary shelters.

The construction of mudpads was a straightforward process. Mud would be gathered and mixed with chopped straw or similar materials to improve its binding and structural integrity. This composite was then spread and smoothed into the desired shape and thickness, often directly on the ground. Once dried, the mudpad would harden, creating a durable surface.
