Motormanagement is the systematic planning, operation, maintenance, and optimization of electric motors and their drive trains within an organization. It encompasses both industrial motors in plants and smaller motors in building services, as well as the accompanying control systems. The goal is to ensure reliable operation, energy efficiency, safety, and cost effectiveness throughout the motor’s life cycle.

Core principles include selecting appropriately sized motors for the duty cycle, prioritizing energy-efficient models (for example high-efficiency IE3/IE4 motors), and applying drive systems such as variable frequency drives or soft starters to match load. Effective motor management also involves protection schemes, thermal management, and routine testing to prevent faults such as overheating, bearing failure, or electrical insulation damage.

A motor management program typically combines asset inventory and tagging, preventive maintenance, condition monitoring, and data-driven decision making. Condition monitoring may use vibration analysis, infrared thermography, motor current signature analysis, insulation resistance tests, and alignment checks for belts, pulleys or couplings. Lubrication management, bearing care, and keeping the environment clean and dry are standard preservation practices. Maintenance intervals are based on manufacturer recommendations, historical failure data, and risk assessment.

Benefits include reduced energy use, lower downtime, longer motor life, and lower total cost of ownership. Challenges include data integration with plant management systems, initial capital costs for sensors and drives, and the need for skilled personnel. International standards such as IEC 60034 for rotating electrical machines and asset-management frameworks like ISO 55000 inform best practices.
