A monospore is a single spore that is produced by certain organisms, particularly fungi and algae. Unlike multi-cellular spores or those that undergo immediate germination, a monospore typically refers to a reproductive unit that is entirely contained within a single cell. This single cell functions as the entire spore, lacking any internal subdivisions.

In the context of fungi, monospores can be found in some less complex fungal groups. They are generally dispersed by environmental factors like wind or water and, upon landing in a suitable environment, can germinate to form a new fungal organism. The simplicity of a monospore means its survival and germination depend heavily on external conditions.

Algae also produce monospores. These are typically formed within specialized reproductive structures called sporangia. After formation, the monospore is released and, if conditions are favorable, will grow into a new algal individual. The term is used to distinguish these single-celled reproductive units from other types of algal spores, such as planospores which are motile. The production of monospores is a common method of asexual reproduction in many algal species, allowing for rapid population growth.
