Monositler are a type of white blood cell, also known as leukocytes, that play a crucial role in the immune system. They are the largest type of white blood cell and are characterized by their large, often kidney-shaped nucleus. Monocytes are produced in the bone marrow and circulate in the bloodstream for a period before migrating into tissues.

Once in the tissues, monocytes differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells, which are the primary phagocytic cells of the immune system. Phagocytosis is the process by which these cells engulf and digest cellular debris, foreign substances, microbes, cancer cells, and anything else that does not have the type of proteins specific to healthy body cells. Macrophages are found throughout the body and are involved in both innate and adaptive immunity. Dendritic cells are primarily found in tissues that are in contact with the external environment, such as the skin and the lining of the nose, lungs, stomach, and intestines. They are important for initiating immune responses by presenting antigens to lymphocytes.

Monocytes and their derivatives are essential for clearing infections and promoting tissue repair. An elevated monocyte count, known as monocytosis, can indicate various conditions, including infections, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and certain types of cancer. Conversely, a low monocyte count, or monocytopenia, is less common and can be associated with bone marrow disorders or certain medical treatments. The precise function and count of monocytes are important indicators of overall immune health.
