Monomerpolymer is a coined term used in polymer science to describe the relationship between monomers and polymers. It is not a standard or widely used entry in the literature, but it can appear in discussions about how small molecules link together and how macromolecules are built from repeating units.

Interpretations. One common interpretation is simply the conventional view: a monomer is a building block that can polymerize to form a polymer whose repeating unit derives from that monomer. In a broader sense, monomerpolymer may denote a system that can switch between monomeric and polymeric states, as in dynamic covalent polymers that depolymerize to monomer units under certain stimuli, or in reversible polymerization processes where equilibrium exists between monomers and polymers.

Other uses describe the continuum between the two concepts: the degree of polymerization, DP, measures how many repeat units are present, linking monomer identity to polymer properties. In living or controlled polymerization, end groups may retain monomer-like functionality, allowing further growth or recycling to monomers.

Examples and implications. Addition and condensation polymerization convert monomers into high-molecular-weight networks or chains. Some materials are designed to be depolymerizable, enabling chemical recycling back to monomers. The monomer–polymer relationship influences properties such as molecular weight, viscosity, thermal behavior, and mechanical strength, as well as processing and recyclability.
