monofunktio

Monofunktio is a term used in Finnish mathematics to denote a function of a single input variable. It corresponds to what is often called a univariate function or unary function in English. The essential feature of a monofunktio is that its input is a single argument, so its domain is some set X and its outputs lie in a codomain Y.

Formally, a monofunktio is a rule that assigns to each element x in X exactly one element f(x) in Y. For real-valued functions, X is typically a subset of the real numbers and Y is often the real numbers, yielding f: X → Y. Common examples include f(x) = x^2, f(x) = sin(x), and f(x) = e^x. Graphically, these functions are represented as curves in the Cartesian plane, illustrating the relationship between a single independent variable and its dependent value.

Monofunktio are distinguished from multivariable functions, where the input consists of several variables (for example, f(x, y)). Many properties and tools from real analysis apply to monofunktio, including limits, continuity, monotonicity, and differentiability with respect to the single variable.
