The shared placenta means that the fetuses rely on the same blood supply. While this allows for nutrient and oxygen exchange, it also creates a potential for complications. The most significant risk associated with monochorionic pregnancies is twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). In TTTS, blood flows unevenly between the fetuses, with one twin (the donor) receiving less blood and the other (the recipient) receiving too much.
