Monitoimimittari, commonly referred to as multimeter, is a handheld instrument used to measure several electrical quantities. The most common measurements are voltage (DC and AC), current (DC and AC), and resistance. Many models also offer diode testing, continuity testing, capacitance, and sometimes frequency or temperature measurements. Modern digital multimeters (DMM) provide auto-ranging, a clear digital display, and features such as data hold and backlight. Analog models still exist but are less common for precise readings.

A typical multimeter consists of a control knob or button, a pair of test leads (red and black), and several input jacks, usually including COM for common, V/Ω for voltage and resistance, and separate mA and sometimes 10A jacks for current. Using a multimeter involves basic safety precautions. For voltage and resistance measurements, the probe configuration is connected in parallel (voltage) or with the circuit powered down (resistance). Current measurements require the circuit to be opened and the meter placed in series, using the appropriate current input jack. Always start with the highest range if the meter lacks auto-ranging. Use proper fusing and keep hands clear of live circuits to avoid shock or damage.
