Monimuoto-opiskelu is a form of higher education in Finland that combines multiple modes of study, usually distance learning with some on-campus contact or flexible scheduling. It is designed for people who work, live far from campus, or need adaptable study arrangements. Programs are offered by universities and universities of applied sciences (AMK) and cover bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as professional qualifications.

Delivery methods include distance learning online, asynchronous and synchronous virtual sessions, evening and weekend courses, and short residencies or contact days. The exact structure varies by program, with some degrees being largely online and others requiring periodic on-site attendance. Students typically register for courses, plan a study timetable, complete assignments, and earn credits (opintopisteet).

Advantages include greater flexibility, the possibility to combine studies with work, and better regional access. Challenges can include the need for strong self-discipline, potentially longer time to degree completion, and fewer on-campus networking opportunities. Universities and AMKs usually provide support services for distance and part-time students, such as study coaching and online libraries.

Student financial aid (opintotuki) is available to eligible students, regardless of study mode. Monimuoto-opiskelu aims to widen access to higher education and support lifelong learning.
