monikielisessä

Monikielisessä is the inessive singular form of the Finnish adjective monikielinen, meaning “in a multilingual” or “in a multilingual context.” It is used to describe settings, practices or phenomena that involve several languages and to modify a noun in sentences such as monikielisessä yhteisössä (in a multilingual community) or monikielisessä koulussa (in a multilingual school). In Finnish grammar, adjectives agree with the noun in case, number and definiteness, and the inessive form indicates location or state.

In sociolinguistics and language policy, the broader concept is monikielisyys, multilingualism, referring to the use and coexistence of multiple languages within a community, institution or country. Monikieliset arrangements are common in multilingual settings and are often supported by language education policies, translation and interpretation services, and inclusive practices.
