Monachos is the Greek term for a monk, a male member of a religious community who withdraws from ordinary life to pursue asceticism, prayer, and spiritual discipline. The word derives from a root meaning "alone" or "solitary," and it has given rise to the English word "monk" as well as the adjective "monastic." In Greek Orthodox, Catholic, and many other Christian traditions, a monachos may live as a solitary hermit (eremite) or within a community of monks (cenobite).

Monastic life typically involves vows or promises, such as poverty, chastity, obedience, or the more general "stability" in a particular tradition. Daily life centers on liturgical prayer, manual labor, study, and personal spiritual practice. Habits, rules, and organizational structures vary by rite or order. Some communities are autonomous hermits; others are organized under an abbot or superior.

Historically, monasticism arose in the late antique period, with Egyptian and Levantine desert fathers promoting eremitic life, and early cenobitic communities forming under Pachomius and others. In the Western church, monastic practice was shaped by the Rule of Saint Benedict in the 6th century. Monasteries became centers of liturgy, learning, manuscript production, and social service, influencing both religious and broader society.

Today, monachos and monastic life continue in Eastern Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and some Protestant contexts, with countless monasteries and reform movements worldwide. The term remains a basic linguistic anchor for the wider phenomena of Christian and historical monasticism.
