Moisture-reactive describes substances that undergo a chemical or physical transformation in response to moisture, typically atmospheric humidity or contact with water. The moisture trigger can induce polymerization, hydrolysis, hydration, dissolution, swelling, or phase changes, depending on chemical structure and environment. The term is used across polymers, sealants, coatings, and high-humidity sensing materials.

Mechanisms include moisture-curing silicones and some polyurethanes, where surface moisture initiates crosslinking to form elastomeric films. Moisture-activated adhesives, such as cyanoacrylates, cure rapidly when moisture in the air or on a substrate initiates polymerization. Hydrogels absorb water and swell, often with reversible or irreversible network expansion. Hydration of salts or metal oxides can alter conductivity or color, enabling sensing functionality.

Applications encompass sealing and bonding, smart coatings, moisture sensors, hydrogels for drug delivery, and moisture-responsive actuators. Materials are designed with specific response times and environmental tolerances. Evaluation methods include exposure tests at defined relative humidity, dynamic vapor sorption, and monitoring changes in mass, volume, or mechanical properties.

Limitations include sensitivity to ambient humidity causing unintended activation, storage and shelf-life considerations requiring controlled conditions, performance variation with temperature and impurities, and potential degradation from moisture ingress in some systems.
