Modulointilähde, often translated as modulation source or modulator, is a fundamental concept in signal processing and communications. It refers to a signal or a device that generates a signal used to control or alter the characteristics of another signal, known as the carrier signal. This process is called modulation.

The primary purpose of modulation is to enable the efficient transmission of information, particularly over long distances or through specific media. By modifying aspects of the carrier wave, such as its amplitude, frequency, or phase, the information-bearing signal can be encoded onto it. This allows for multiplexing, where multiple signals can occupy the same transmission channel without interference, and for adapting the signal to the properties of the transmission medium.

Common types of modulation sources include oscillators that produce sinusoidal waves, pulse generators creating discrete signals, and digital signal generators that output sequences of values. In analog modulation, the modulation source typically generates a continuous waveform whose parameters are varied in proportion to the message signal. For example, in amplitude modulation (AM), the modulation source dictates the variations in the amplitude of the carrier wave. In frequency modulation (FM), it controls the frequency deviations.

In digital modulation, the modulation source is often a digital signal processor or a lookup table that maps digital data bits to specific carrier signal states. This allows for the transmission of digital information efficiently and robustly. The choice of modulation source and the type of modulation employed depend heavily on the application, considering factors like bandwidth, noise immunity, power efficiency, and data rate requirements.
