Modificative is a term used in grammar and linguistics to refer to a word or element that modifies another word, thereby altering or specifying its meaning. In English and many other languages, the primary examples are adjectives and adverbs, which modify nouns and verbs or adjectives themselves. For instance, in “red apple” the adjective red is a modificative of the noun apple; in “run quickly” the adverb quickly modifies the verb run. Some grammars extend the notion to other modifiers such as determiners (the, a) that specify a noun, degree modifiers (very, quite), and other qualifying items that restrict or refine reference or force.

In historical descriptions, “modificative” is a label used for words that express modification rather than content-bearing core meaning. The term is less common in contemporary syntax, where “modifier” is the standard term, and “modification” is the process. Some linguistic traditions distinguish between attributive modifiers (appearing with the head noun) and predicative modifiers (completing a subject-predicate). In morphology, some languages have derivational or inflectional morphemes that function as modificatives by limiting or specifying the base’s sense, rather than forming a new lexical item.
