Modermærker, also known as nevi, are common skin growths that can appear anywhere on the body. They are typically benign, meaning they are not cancerous. Modermærker are formed when pigment-producing cells in the skin, called melanocytes, grow in clusters. Their appearance can vary greatly in size, shape, color, and texture. Most people have between 10 and 40 modermærker.

The exact cause of modermærker is not fully understood, but genetics and sun exposure are believed to play significant roles. They can be present at birth (congenital nevi) or develop over time. The color of a modermærke usually ranges from tan to brown or black, though some can be pink, red, or even skin-colored.

While most modermærker are harmless, it is important to monitor them for changes. The ABCDE rule is a helpful guide for identifying potentially concerning changes: Asymmetry (one half of the mole doesn't match the other), Border irregularity (edges are notched or blurred), Color variation (different shades of brown, black, tan, or even red, white, or blue), Diameter (larger than 6 millimeters, about the size of a pencil eraser), and Evolving (changes in size, shape, color, or elevation, or new symptoms like bleeding, itching, or crusting). If any of these changes are observed, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist to rule out melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Regular skin self-examinations and professional check-ups are crucial for early detection.
