Mitofagialla is a term that appears in some Italian-language discussions of cellular biology. It is not part of standard scientific nomenclature and is generally regarded as a colloquial or informal variant of mitophagia (mitophagy). The word combines the prefix mito- (mitochondria) with fagia (eating) and the diminutive suffix -ella, which in Italian can imply a smaller or less formal usage.

Usage and interpretation: In Italian sources, mitofagialla may be employed to refer to the same process described by mitophagy, namely the selective autophagic degradation of mitochondria. However, this form is inconsistent and not widely recognized in peer‑reviewed literature. Because of its ambiguity, many writers prefer the canonical term mitophagia/mitophagy.

Biological context: Mitophagy is part of cellular quality control, ensuring damaged mitochondria are removed to prevent reactive oxygen species production and cellular dysfunction. The canonical pathway involves recognition of damaged mitochondria, engulfment by autophagosomes, and lysosomal degradation. If mitofagialla is used, it should be clarified whether the author means mitophagy specifically or a different, informal nuance.
