If the mineral meets established criteria, a proposed name is considered. Names should be unique, non-offensive, and appropriate for international use; they are often formed to reflect a locality, a physical property, or to honor a person. The name is typically Latinized as needed and commonly ends in a conventional mineral-name ending, such as -ite or -ate, though there are notable exceptions. After review, the CNMNC publishes the official nomenclature, and the name becomes the recognized standard in journals and databases such as Mindat and Webmineral.

Mineral names and naming conventions help communicate information about composition, origin, and history of minerals.
