The process typically involves preparing a porous mineral surface, applying a dye or pigment solution, and allowing a fixation step to improve adhesion and colorfastness. Methods include immersion for porous stones, brushing or spraying for broader coverage, and, in some cases, vapor-phase or heat-assisted treatments. Dyes used range from natural plant extracts and mineral pigments to synthetic organic dyes and inorganic metal salts. Binders or sealants, such as acrylic resins or silica-based coatings, may be employed to stabilize the color and reduce solubility.

The effectiveness of mineraldyeing depends on mineral properties such as porosity, surface energy, and chemical composition.
