Milliosmolaritás, often abbreviated as mOsm/L, is a unit of measurement used to express the osmolarity of a solution. Osmolarity refers to the total concentration of dissolved solute particles in a solution. Specifically, milliosmolaritás quantifies the number of milliosmoles of solute per liter of solution. A milliosmole is one-thousandth of an osmole. An osmole represents the number of moles of solute that contribute to the osmotic pressure of a solution. The osmotic pressure is the pressure that needs to be applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of its pure solvent across a semipermeable membrane.

In biological contexts, milliosmolaritás is crucial for understanding fluid and electrolyte balance. For example, blood plasma has a normal osmolarity of around 280-300 mOsm/L. Intravenous fluids are also carefully formulated with specific milliosmolaritás values to match or adjust the osmolarity of bodily fluids, preventing adverse effects like cell shrinkage or swelling. Different solutes contribute differently to osmolarity; for instance, a single molecule of glucose contributes one osmole, while a molecule of sodium chloride dissociates into two particles (sodium ion and chloride ion) and thus contributes two osmoles. Therefore, understanding the dissociation behavior of solutes is essential when calculating milliosmolaritás. This unit is widely used in clinical chemistry, nephrology, and physiology.
