Millimeter waves, often abbreviated as mmWave, refer to a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This band spans frequencies from 30 gigahertz (GHz) to 300 GHz. These frequencies correspond to wavelengths ranging from 1 millimeter (mm) to 10 millimeters. Due to their short wavelengths, millimeter waves are sometimes referred to as "submillimeter waves" or, in astronomy, as "tremendously high frequency" (THF) waves.

The properties of millimeter waves make them suitable for a variety of applications. Their high frequencies allow for a large bandwidth, which translates to very high data transmission rates. This is a key reason for their increasing use in next-generation wireless communication technologies, such as 5G cellular networks, where they can offer significantly faster speeds and lower latency compared to lower frequency bands.

However, millimeter waves also have some limitations. Their short wavelengths make them more susceptible to atmospheric absorption, especially by water vapor and oxygen. They also have a shorter range and are easily blocked by physical obstacles like walls, buildings, and even rain. This necessitates the use of smaller, more numerous base stations or access points for consistent coverage.

Beyond telecommunications, millimeter waves are utilized in radar systems, security scanners (like those found in airports), and in scientific research, particularly in radio astronomy for observing certain molecular emissions in space. The development and deployment of technologies utilizing millimeter waves continue to advance, opening up new possibilities across various fields.
