Miljöresistensen, often translated as environmental resistance, is a concept in ecology that describes the sum of biotic and abiotic factors in an environment that limit the population growth of a species. These factors prevent a population from reaching its theoretical maximum size, known as its biotic potential. Environmental resistance acts as a natural brake on population expansion, maintaining a balance within an ecosystem.

The components of environmental resistance can be broadly categorized. Abiotic factors include non-living elements such as climate (temperature, rainfall, sunlight), water availability, soil conditions, and natural disasters like fires or floods. These can directly impact survival, reproduction, and resource availability.

Biotic factors, on the other hand, are living components. These include competition for resources like food, water, and space, predation by other species, parasitism, and disease. The presence of pathogens and parasites can weaken individuals, reduce reproductive success, and increase mortality. Competition can occur within the same species (intraspecific) or between different species (interspecific).

The strength of environmental resistance can vary greatly depending on the specific ecosystem and the species in question. A stable environment with abundant resources might exhibit lower resistance, allowing populations to grow more readily, while a harsh or resource-limited environment will exert stronger resistance.
