miljarder

Miljarder is a Nordic numeric term used to denote the quantity 1,000,000,000 (one thousand million). In Swedish, en miljard is the singular form and miljarder is the plural, and the term is widely used to describe large sums in finance, statistics and everyday language.

The word functions as the standard label for a billion in the short-scale system, where 10^9 equals one miljard. This usage is common in Swedish and many other Nordic languages in contemporary contexts. In practice, sentences such as several miljarder kronor are common when reporting large financial figures. Linguistically, the form miljarer is tied to the count of billions and changes with number, as in en miljard, två miljarder, etc.

In neighboring languages, similar terms exist with slight variations. Norwegian Bokmål uses milliard (singular) and milliarder (plural), while Danish uses milliard with its plural forms as well.
