Some data are self-reported; others come from monitoring. Quality control and standardization vary by jurisdiction.

Examples: In the European Union, the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (E-PRTR) collects data on releases and transfers of pollutants from industrial facilities. The EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) maintains a registry of allowances and verified emissions. National registries exist in many countries to collect permit data and inventories.
