A mikroarcsecond is a unit of angular measurement, representing one millionth of an arcsecond. An arcsecond, in turn, is a subdivision of a degree, with one degree being equal to 60 arcminutes and one arcminute being equal to 60 arcseconds. Therefore, one arcsecond is equal to 1/3600 of a degree. Consequently, a mikroarcsecond is 1/3,600,000,000,000 of a degree.

This unit is extremely small and is primarily used in fields requiring highly precise angular measurements. Astronomy is one such field, where the apparent size of distant celestial objects or the subtle shifts in their positions due to various phenomena can be measured in mikroarcseconds. For example, astrometry, the branch of astronomy concerned with the precise position and movement of stars, may utilize such fine units. Gravitational lensing, where the gravity of massive objects bends light from objects behind them, can cause subtle distortions in images that are measured in fractions of an arcsecond, and thus potentially in mikroarcseconds for very precise analysis.

The extremely small scale of a mikroarcsecond also finds application in high-precision metrology, the science of measurement.
