Migrability is a property describing how easily an object can move from one environment or context to another. In technology, it typically refers to portability across platforms, formats, or deployment targets, including transferring data and functionality with minimal loss and disruption.

In software engineering, migrability is pursued to reduce vendor lock-in during platform transitions, cloud migrations, or modernization projects. It relies on interoperability, standards-compliant data models, explicit export/import capabilities, and stable APIs. Design choices such as decoupled components, containerization, and data-agnostic formats contribute to higher migrability.

Assessment of migrability considers the availability of migration guides, automated tooling for transformation, data fidelity tests, and estimates of cost and downtime. Indicators include data portability, API stability, backward compatibility, and the ability to reproduce migrations across versions with minimal risk.

In ecology and social science contexts, migrability is sometimes used to describe the capacity of populations or communities to relocate or adapt in response to environmental change or policy shifts, though the term is less standardized there.

Common examples include migrating software from on-premises to the cloud, converting data between formats, or moving databases between systems. Challenges include data integrity, downtime, regulatory compliance, and compatibility with downstream tools.
