Microcomets are small icy bodies, similar to larger comets but significantly smaller in size. They are thought to originate from the outer solar system, much like their larger counterparts, and are composed of ice, dust, and rock. Their estimated diameters typically range from a few meters to tens of meters.

These miniature celestial objects are believed to be remnants from the early formation of the solar system. As they approach the Sun, the ice within them begins to sublimate, releasing gas and dust. This process creates a temporary atmosphere, or coma, around the nucleus, and sometimes a faint tail. However, due to their small size, these features are often transient and less pronounced than those of larger comets.

The study of microcomets is important for understanding the composition and evolution of the early solar system. They may have played a role in delivering volatile compounds, such as water and organic molecules, to the inner planets, including Earth.
