It typically records a count, linear sum and squared sum, enabling calculation of the centroid and dispersion without storing every point. Microclusters are updated incrementally as new data arrive, can be aged or weighted by time, and can be merged or split. They underpin streaming clustering approaches such as CluStream and DenStream by providing a scalable representation of evolving patterns while using bounded memory.

For example, T cell receptor microclusters form at the immunological synapse during antigen recognition, organizing signaling cascades and amplifying the activation signal.
