Micrites are a type of carbonate rock, specifically a limestone, characterized by a very fine-grained matrix. The individual grains in micrite are typically less than 4 micrometers in diameter, giving the rock a mud-like appearance. This fine grain size is often referred to as "micrite fabric" or "micritic texture."

The origin of micrite is a subject of ongoing scientific discussion. Several theories exist regarding its formation. One prominent theory suggests that micrite is formed from the aragonitic mud produced by the burrowing activity of organisms like algae and microbes. These organisms break down carbonate skeletal fragments and soft tissues into microscopic particles. Another hypothesis proposes that micrite is formed by the in-situ precipitation of calcium carbonate from seawater, potentially influenced by biological activity. Chemical precipitation in low-energy environments, such as the interiors of reefs or calm marine basins, is also considered a contributing factor.

Micrite is a common component of many sedimentary rock sequences, particularly in ancient marine environments. It forms the matrix in various limestone types, including packstones, grainstones, and wackestones, where it infills the spaces between larger skeletal fragments or grains. Its presence indicates deposition in relatively quiet water conditions where the fine particles could settle and accumulate without significant disturbance. The color of micrite can vary widely, from pale gray to dark gray or even black, depending on the presence of organic matter or other impurities.
